Practicing Phonics using Simple Word Sorts

practicing phonics using simple word sorts

I remember when I was in first grade 49 years ago, practicing phonics using simple word sorts in workbooks. The repetitive word families were decorated with basic pictures. I always caught on quickly during our lessons and independent practice. However, there were other students who needed more time to practice. I have worked with similar students as a teacher. That’s why I decided to create phonics practice with simple word sorts activities.

My first and second grade students in my Basic Skills classes need extra help in reading and writing. Many of my students had difficulty with retaining the phonetic concepts they learned in kindergarten and first grade. They needed more practice working short and long vowels. I wanted activities that were hands-on and had few decorations to minimize distractions. So I created my cut and paste word sort activities and word sort journals with those goals in mind.

One of favorite activities to use is my Logo Phonics Task Card Journal. I have my students create words using short vowel word families from common restaurant and product names they see in real life. My Logo Phonics and the other activities are easy to use and are a great addition to your literacy center. So stop by our store to check out our word sorts!
